Parkdale
With one of the most diverse demographics of any Toronto neighbourhood, Parkdale is currently experiencing a rejuvenation. During the first half of the 20th century, Parkdale was one of Toronto's most prestigious neighbourhoods because of its proximity to Lake Ontario. However, the neighbourhood began a dramatic decline when the Gardiner Expressway was built in 1955 creating a barrier between the neighbourhood and the lake. Many of its prosperous residents moved west and were replaced by lower income and recent immigrant families. Today, Parkdale is showing many signs of gentrification with artists and young professionals flocking to the unique shops, restaurants, and bars along Queen Street West. The possibility of restoring some of the grand Victorian mansions has drawn many new residents to Parkdale.
The mansions that are evident in South Parkdale were built between 1875 and 1895. Over the years, many of these stately houses have been converted into rooming houses. However over the last few years the trend has been to restore these beautiful homes to single family use. Great examples can be found along Cowan Avenue and Dunn Avenue. In North Parkdale, above Queen Street, the houses are just as charming, displaying Victorian-style architecture. These houses were built between 1900 and 1910.
